What Counts as a "Medical Aesthetic Treatment" in Ontario? In Ontario, medical aesthetic treatments are procedures that alter the skin or tissue using clinical-grade devices, injectables, or chemicals. These include: Botox (neuromodulators) Dermal fillers (e.g. Juvederm, Teosyal) Microneedling Platelet-rich plasma (PRP/PRF) Chemical peels (medium/deep) Laser hair removal IPL treatments (for pigmentation, rosacea, etc.) Morpheus8 and RF microneedling Skin resurfacing and tightening treatments Some of these are classified as controlled acts, and others fall under esthetic or cosmetology guidelines. Understanding which is which is key. Who Can Legally Inject Botox or Dermal Fillers in Ontario? According to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, only regulated health professionals are permitted to inject Botox or dermal fillers. This includes: Medical Doctors (MDs) Nurse Practitioners (NPs) Registered Nurses (RNs) Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) Dentists (DDS) These professionals must be trained in aesthetic injection techniques and must work under a medical directive or independently if authorized (NPs, MDs). What If I’m an IMG (International Medical Graduate)? Many IMG doctors in Canada are not currently practicing medicine.
